STUDENT FEES WAIVED FOR 2009-2010

At the Thursday, August 20, 2009 Board of Education meeting the Board voted to waive all K-12 student instructional fees for the 2009-2010 School Year.  This waiver of student fees applies to all K-12 students.  This waiver of instruction fees does not apply to wood for student projects in shop classes or extra-curricular fees.  It also does not waive any student fees owed from previous school years.  The Board of Education recognizes the challenging economy that we are all experiencing and wants to do everything possible to help our parents make it through these tough economic times.

Mrs. Swope – Grade 6 Language Arts

Welcome back! Hopefully, 2010 will continue to be a productive and interesting year.

My Language Arts classes have been reading some Literature Book stories and great novels such as Maniac Magee, Freak the Mighty and recently, Max the Mighty. In the future, we will be reading Number the Stars. A poetry unit is right around the corner.

We collected some awesome projects for Maniac Magee, Freak, and Max. We will be enhancing our descriptive writing by making “Snow Buddies” soon!

We have been improving our writing skills with editing/proofreading our written work, using the meatball outline, and reviewing the parts of speech. We have also been trying to improve our restating and making sure we answer all parts of our two and four point responses for the OAA and essays by creating a “checklist” for guidance.

The reading OAA for us will be on Monday, April 26th! There will be more information to come as we get closer. We will have a “practice like you are going to perform” on Jan. 25! This is an important “run-through” for the real thing.

Reminders: spelling and/or reading vocabulary lists are handed out on Mondays with the test(s) to follow on Fridays, unless otherwise noted. I will try to have the words listed on Progress Book.

We have reading logs in progress. Please make sure students are reading every night. Eighty minutes is required for the week and assignments will be forthcoming on their independent reading.

AR points are due by January 12, 2010, for the second grading period.

Thanks to all the students and parents that check the assignments on our website!

Oral Communications is a new mini-course for Philo Junior High Seventh Graders.  The students get a chance to share their hobbies, past times, or family vacations.  Each student gives a 3-5 minute speech that they prepare in class.  It must be about something they already know about without having to research.

The students are also reading children stories, poems, and short plays out loud to the class.

This course should help students to have more confidence when they are asked to recite in an academic class.

Gage Huey….”How to show a pig at the Fair”

Madison Shaw…”Memories of Grandma”

Inclement weather is here once again! While our automated call out system is great for providing updates about school closings or other events, it only works properly when your phone numbers are correct. If you have changed a phone number for your home or have added phone numbers to the system please make sure they are valid. In particular, please make sure if you have added a cell phone to the call out system that this is your current number. Cell numbers have wide coverage these days and get reassigned after you change plans or service providers.  We have had calls from people hundreds of miles away wondering why Franklin Local Schools are calling them to let them know that school is cancelled or about an upcoming event because they now have a phone number that used to belong to the parent of a Franklin Local student. Please contact your school’s office with any changes in your home phone number. If you have added numbers (cell, work, etc.) in the call out system, please verify that they are valid. Complete directions are on the website (www.franklin-local.k12.oh.us) under the parent links tab or if you need assistance, call our central office at (740) 674-5203.
